Mid-Season Horse Trials Team Report

The season started with the Open Horse Trials Qualifier, this year at Borde Hill, as part of the British Eventing competition on May 30th. Rebecca Riiser and Charlie Worcester represented the club again at this level and succeeded in qualifying. There were 4, Area 11 competitors so it was hoped they may have been able to make up an area team, but this was not to be.

The following weekend Caroline Brougham and Oscar de Pen ar Parc and Amy Tegg and Le Buccaneer set of to Aston-
le-Walls to contest the Senior Pairs Eventers Challenge Championships, the four of them had great fun and stormed round clear, but unfortunately they incurred time penalties for going too fast and finished 9th.

The next outing was the novice London and South East and Area Qualifiers run as one competition and the Area intermediate Qualifier at Rackham on July 10th. this is a fairly new venue near Pulborough, and is wonderfully set out for the team manager trying to follow 2 teams and a reserve! Our novice team was Rebecca Riiser and Geronimo, Emma Thompson and King`s Charter, Amy Tegg and Le Buccaneer and Sophie Thompson with Pippa. We also had a reserve in Gemma Davies and Fool`s Gold 111. They went very well, but unfortunately Le Buccaneer decided solo cross country was not for him. However, the team won by the narrowist of margins, .3 of a point ahead of Chipstead in 2nd and .9 of a point ahead of Elstead in 3rd! Becca, Emma and Sophie were all placed individually in their arenas.

The intermediate team was Ian Carey and Sharkham`s Real McCoy, Emma Thompson and Templar Faere, Portia McKay-Forbes and Farney Stepper and Caroline Brougham with Oscar de Pen ar Parc. They went very well, to win convincingly, Ian
won overall with Portia in second and Caroline in fifth place.

The team went on to win the Intermediate Championships!!!

Team Winter Dressage Friendly - 15th April 2011 at Priory Equestrian Centre, Frensham

This was one of the two area team competitions held over the winter period. The original date for this fixture was 12th February, but it had to be postponed due to bad weather. We therefore had a busy couple of weeks with team competitions.
The teams consisted of three members; riding Prelim 12, Prelim 14 and Novice 24.

The teams:
The Oaks were Sally Bakhuizen on Kligar; Emily O’Dell on Mr Flynn and Lucie Myhill on Mr Piper.
The Elms were Sophie Thompson on Sam; Fiona Foster on Abbey Heights and Debs Linscott on Connor.
The Yews were Lorna Thompson on Wiggy; Lorraine Terry on Memphis 66 and Kim Carey on Mac.

Yet again our team members were brilliant. Everyone turned up with plenty of time to spare, which is always a relief as a team manager. I am very lucky to have such lovely team members to work with. Our team members and their horses were all beautifully turned out. It was another long day as our first team member went at 9.36am and the last was at 4.18pm. Our teams did us proud and all performed lovely tests, even with distractions! Abbey Heights took issue with the green bucket at the edge of the warm up; the scary monster in the hedge spooked Sam and special mention should go to Debs and Connor who coped brilliantly with a dog chasing the horses in the paddock next to the warm up followed by a loose horse galloping around the car park. The same horse broke free again as they were doing their test and appeared in the opening by the indoor arena!

The results were as follows:
1st Elstead White 10 points
2nd Newlands Corner Yews 11 points
3rd Wey Valley Waves 13 points
4th Newlands Corner Elms 15 points
5th Wey Valley Wasps 16 points
6th Elstead Blue 19 points

Individual placings
1st Fiona Foster – Abbey Heights
3rd Sophie Thompson – Sam
4th Kim Carey – Mac
5th Sally Bakhuizen – Kligar
5th Lorraine Terry – Memphis 66

A big thank you and well done to all our team members, you were all great and I am a very proud team manager.

To add to this, the scores for the two friendlies are combined and the best overall team is awarded the area cup. The cup was awarded to....... US!! What a fantastic start to the year.
